Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha Launches Artist-Owned Music Label Benaras Beat

Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha has ventured into the music business with the launch of Benaras Beat, an artist-owned music label that marks his entry into the industry as an entrepreneur.

Sinha revealed that the idea for the label had been in the works for nearly eight years. Speaking to PTI, he said the difference between a dream and an ambition comes down to taking action.

“So, there is a saying that if you want to do something and you don't do anything about it, then it's a dream, and if you want to do something and you do a lot about it, then it's an ambition,” Sinha said.

The filmmaker, who has maintained a long-standing association with music, said his passion for the medium goes back to childhood. He also began formally learning music three years ago.

“Benaras Beat was formed in my head and in the office about 7-8 years back. I love music, so much so that 3 years back I started learning music. It is my ambition for music since childhood, there is music playing in my room all the time,” he said.

According to Sinha, the label was conceived with the intention of creating music beyond films. However, the project took time to materialise as he initially did not have a team in place.

“The idea germinated about 7-8 years back when I thought I’ll make music outside of films as well, but I could not set up a team. This happened about a year back when I started working with a couple of composers, the whole team was set up, and now we have created some songs,” he added.

With Benaras Beat, Sinha now joins the growing number of creators and filmmakers exploring opportunities beyond traditional film production and entering the music business.

Sinha is known for films including Mulk and Anek, as well as the series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. His latest directorial, Assi, starring Taapsee Pannu, is currently streaming on ZEE5.
