A.R. Rahman’s composition ‘Mangal Rang’ from the upcoming mythological epic Ramayana has reached the No. 1 position on YouTube Music, even as the track continues to spark debate across social media over its musical arrangement and visual portrayal of Lord Rama and Sita.
The Oscar-winning composer shared a screenshot of the song’s chart position on Instagram, thanking listeners for their support. “No 1 on @youtubemusic. Thanks for the love everyone,” Rahman wrote.
His daughter, Khatija Rahman, also reacted to the achievement, commenting, “You will always shine.” Several fans voiced their support for the composer, defending the track amid the criticism surrounding its release.
Why ‘Mangal Rang’ Has Sparked Debate
Composed by Rahman and featuring vocals by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal, ‘Mangal Rang’ celebrates the relationship between Lord Rama and Sita in Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari.
Following its release, some listeners questioned the song’s musical arrangement, comparing its sound to qawwali and drawing parallels with elements of Rahman’s earlier compositions. Others debated whether the musical style suited a cinematic adaptation of the Hindu epic.
The discussion also extended to a scene showing women applying haldi to Lord Rama, with Sita standing beside him. Some viewers questioned her presence during the ceremony, while others suggested the sequence could depict a coronation rather than a conventional haldi ritual.
Despite the mixed reactions, the song’s chart performance has added another dimension to the conversation, highlighting the difference between online criticism and audience engagement.
