Mahindra Percussion Festival Returns For A Spectacular 3rd Edition, Honoring Ustad Zakir Hussain

The Mahindra Percussion Festival is set to make a grand return for its third edition on March 1-2, 2025, at the Prestige Centre of Performing Arts, Bengaluru. This year’s festival holds profound significance as it pays tribute to the late Ustad Zakir Hussain, a maestro who revolutionized Indian classical percussion and left an indelible mark on the global music scene.

A Celebration of Rhythm and Legacy

With an exceptional lineup of artists blending tradition with contemporary influences, the festival promises two days of electrifying performances that honor both the roots and the future of percussion music.

Day 1 Highlights:

The festival kicks off with the legendary Trilok Gurtu, a globally celebrated percussionist known for his innovative rhythmic fusions. Gurtu, who has collaborated with musical greats like L. Shankar, John McLaughlin, and Ustad Zakir Hussain, will set the stage for an unforgettable opening night.

Adding to the immersive experience is Aruna Sairam’s Thrillana Project, a unique performance featuring Sangeet Haldipur and BC Manjunath. This ensemble blends classical music and mythology, transforming sonic storytelling into a mesmerizing art form.

The first evening also showcases Ravi Chary’s solo project, Crossing. The son of Pt. Prabhakar Chary, Ravi presents an album that was launched by none other than Ustad Zakir Hussain himself. The project features past festival luminaries such as Ranjit Barot and Taufiq Qureshi, making it a deeply personal and celebratory performance.

Day 2 Highlights:

The energy continues with a dynamic collaboration by Ranjit Barot and Roysten Abel’s BeatRoute, a project that merges folk rhythms with electronic elements. Barot, a pioneering drummer and composer, crafts an electrifying soundscape that bridges India’s percussive traditions with modern innovations.

Closing the festival on a high note is SNAX, a Chennai-based duo that brings together rock, metal, jazz, and Carnatic percussion in a high-energy fusion. Their performance promises to be a breathtaking blend of ancient and contemporary soundscapes.
