TikTok Parent ByteDance Shuts Down Resso In India, Refunds Offered To Subscribers

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is discontinuing its premium music streaming service, Resso, in India as of January 31. This decision, confirmed by a ByteDance spokesperson on January 11, is attributed to local market conditions, leading to the inability to serve Resso users in India. The shutdown encompasses Resso and its related operations, offering users refunds for their remaining subscription fees.

Having launched in India in March 2020, Resso continued to operate post-TikTok's ban in the country. The government in India has now directed Apple and Google to remove Resso from their app stores.

Resso is no longer available for download on Google Play or the Apple App Store in India. Existing users can still access the app, but they are unable to purchase new subscriptions.

ByteDance has assured that its separate global premium music streaming service, TikTok Music, remains unaffected by Resso's discontinuation in India. TikTok Music is currently available in Australia, Singapore, Mexico, Brazil, and Indonesia. It was publicly launched in Australia, Singapore, and Mexico in October 2023, following an initial beta roll-out in those markets in July 2023. TikTok Music also debuted in Brazil and Indonesia two weeks after TikTok officially introduced the service. Resso ceased operations in Brazil and Indonesia on September 5, 2023, aligning with TikTok Music's launch in those countries. ByteDance has confirmed that users can transfer their Resso accounts to TikTok Music. However, there are no plans to introduce TikTok Music in India.

In Brazil and Indonesia, TikTok Music is licensed by all three major record companies: Sony Music, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group. However, its public launch in Australia, Singapore, and Mexico included only the catalogs of Sony Music Group and Warner Music Group, excluding Universal Music Group's recorded music repertoire in those regions.
