Amit Trivedi "I Want An Independent Musician To Be Bigger Than a Bollywood Star"

In the past one month, Amit Trivedi has grabbed many projects, and eyes! While the fans cannot stop wooing Amit Trivedi, we will take you through what he said to us when we asked him about Indian Music Industry Landscape today. There is no doubt he is an extremely talented musician, he has given back-to-back high-quality music to the B-Industry. Amit Trivedi might just be one of the few Bollywood composers who is as much loved by the independent music fans as by the Bollywood lovers. It's interesting to note that he also is a great thought leader, thoughts that support the music community, and would drive positive change within the Music Industry.

All About Music, held at Taj Land Ends on September 18-19, 2017, witnessed a fun, engaging conversation with Amit Trivedi. Here are some highlights from then,

How does Trivedi do it? 

Amit Trivedi said, "Bollywood is a collaborative effort", it's a beautiful process. There is no one person who makes the music, there is the director, producer, composer & lyricist working together for the magic to happen. Advertising is only a product you create, 30-40 seconds to make an impact.  And the only place I feel very liberated as an artist is when I work independently. I felt this very close to my heart at Coke Studio, and Dewarists. And of course, there is no ACTOR, PRODUCER, LABEL etc. telling me what to do? It becomes my expression, its all about me and my life, I can do whatever I want. I honestly love doing all, each has its advantages & disadvantages, as long as I enjoy the process, I am happy.

You'd be happy to know, every Bollywood music composer is as much against "templatization" of "HIT" music as an independent artist would be. There is no divide in creative processes, thoughts of any musician. There are multiple factors that come into play as you dive into any project.

Amit Trivedi told the audience, "I am a director's composer, and I am proud to say that. I love going too deep into the script, the concept, the thought. I don't make music for creating a "HIT", I make music for the film, the vision that the director has. That's what I am here for." 

Loudest got in a conversation with Amit Trivedi, asked a few questions. Answers to which every stakeholder in the music industry is looking out for, read below to know what he had to say.

Loudest: Who are the most neglected professionals in the Music Industry today?

Amit Trivedi: Wow, that's a fantastic question. What does the audience see first?  Singers & Actors, right? Other than that, you might not see many others. The listeners must know, behind the singers and actors there is a massive team of "neglected professionals". While the extremely talented people are always neglected, Lyricists, music producers, sound engineers. They are our backbones. A singer today can sing, because of technology, all the fixes in the production. I feel very strongly for the hidden gems who make it all happen.

Loudest: What would you like to change in today's Indian Music industry?

Amit Trivedi: While I am nobody to say since I am still learning a lot of things. A lot can be better, while I would want to see one thing for sure, our independent musician should shine brighter than any other star out there, as big as any Bollywood star one day. Maybe Bigger, actually, definitely, BIGGER! When that day comes, it would be the best day for the music industry.

Loudest: What is your take on "templatization" or "formula replication" when it comes to making music in the Film Industry?

Amit Trivedi: See, I would say, it's a chain effect, it starts with the end user, that is you guys. Firstly, the attention span is extremely low due to us being overfed with entertainment, information to consume. Excess information, the content available has led to low attention span. Now when it comes to film business, it is only dependent on the first day of the release. They work for two years, for that one successful day, the first day, in the box office. The general misconception between the directors, producers is that a "Hit" song would bring the audiences to the theaters. That's really not true. When a song released is not receiving a good response, there is a sudden panic situation and directors feel safer to pick up an old & remix it rather than risking it out. At the end of the day, they all have to make money too. What would make a person get out of their homes, buy that "Rs.300" ticket to watch that movie? It better be something, BIG. That's exactly what's promoting "HIT" song culture. Which honestly, I am not very fond of.   Some of the recent projects when we saw Amit Trivedi join independent musicians, including the Red Bull Tour Bus concert held in Mumbai this October. Amit Trivedi joined independent artists like Prateek Kuhad, Komorebi, SkyHarbour to name a few, on this incredible musical experience and completely set the stage on fire. Everyone was there for "Music" beyond genres.  Amit Trivedi would be joining Bacardi NH7 Weekender line-up this year in Meghalaya Edition, and we assure you, it would be absolutely LIT.
