Music Inc. 2019: The Big Fat Indian Wedding
A rather interesting panel at the Music Inc conference was The Big Fat Indian Wedding, chaired by Parthip Thyagarajan (CEO Wedding Sutra), the panellists were singer Jasbir Jassi, Aarti Mattoo (Founder and Chairperson, Momentum group), Ankit Khanna (CEO, DNH Artists and AK Projekts), Deepesh Salgia (Director Shapoorji Pallonji Group) and singer Ali Quli Mirza. Conversations revolved around the $50 billion Indian wedding market, the importance of the occasion for Indian families (most Indian families tend to spend a significant part of their savings on weddings), and the appeal of exotic locales for the venue. According to Thyagarajan, even the 2016 demonetization did not affect the industry in terms of the amount of money being spent on weddings. How that money was being spent changed but definitely not the budget, which clearly points to the fact that weddings are an important aspect of life. He further pointed out that some of the most creative people have gravitated towards the wedding industry to make their mark. Aarti Mattoo concurred and stressed that it is not just the entertainment sector but even tourism and a number of other sectors have now become a part of this booming industry.  The importance of the entertainment sector in the Indian wedding industry according to Jasbir Jassi stems from the tradition of song and dance at Indian weddings. Jassi who started his career as a performer in Punjab stressed on the fact that folk music should be revived especially with the younger audience. Ankit Khanna stated that it has been noticed that while people lean towards live entertainment, the digital media has gained importance in this sector. Of course, all the panellists agreed on the importance of social media in promotion for both upcoming and established talent.
