Indo-Welsh Collective Khamira Is All Set To Perform In India
We recently shared an article with you, listing all the live music acts that have been announced in India for the first half of 2018. Guess, We missed out on this one, probably because this is as experimental and awesome as we are. Khamira (Hindi for ‘Yeast’) is a seven-member collective and is composed of four welsh jazz musician and three Indian musicians, and guess what Khamira does? It helps you rise. Yes, pun intended. The collective is a perfect blend of seven musicians, two countries, two genres creating one unique sound. When we first heard about Khamira and the member, we were taken aback for a minute. Each member compliments the other, as well as their instruments. Guess that’s why they call them the weapons of mass creation. The band has released three albums till date under the name ‘Burum’. The three collaborating Indian musicians include Aditya Balani on guitar, Suhail Yusuf Khan on sarangi and vocals and Vishal Nagar on tabla. Burum's Jazz and Funk roots along with Aditya, Yusuf and Vishal's Indian Classical magic yields a surreal experience for listeners. Aditya Balani also suggests:
Khamira’s music is somewhere between the cinematic scope of the Pat Metheny Group and the grunge funk of Miles Davis’ Seventies band, intertwine with passages of melancholic Welsh folk music and Indian classical virtuosity.
Burum has a history as the band has been active since 2007 while they met their Indian counterparts in 2015 on their first tour of India. The members have known each other for quite some time now. The collective even recorded a self-titled album in the summer of 2016. Suhail Yusuf Khan's virtuosic sarangi dovetails with Tomos Williams' trumpet, Vishal Nagar's tabla joins in a feast of rhythms and syncopations with Mark O'Connor's drum kit, while Aditya Balani's soaring guitar solos are supported by Dave Jones' keyboard and Aidan Thorne's bass.
The first stop of the four-city tour is at Delhi, where Khamira plays on January 16, 2018 at British Council, 17, KG Marg. The rest of the venues are in Mumbai, Bangalore, and Goa.
