Spotify has announced Sunidhi Chauhan as its EQUAL Global Ambassador for June 2026, adding the celebrated Indian vocalist to the roster of artists recognised under the streaming platform’s global programme dedicated to advancing women in music.
As part of the month-long campaign, Chauhan will be featured on the covers of Spotify’s EQUAL Global and EQUAL India playlists, placing her music in front of audiences worldwide.
Introduced in 2021, Spotify EQUAL is the platform’s international initiative designed to amplify the voices of women creators through curated editorial playlists, promotional support and marketing campaigns. Every month, Spotify selects artists from participating markets whose influence resonates beyond their home countries.
With a career spanning over 20 years, Chauhan has recorded thousands of songs in multiple Indian languages and continues to rank among India’s most celebrated playback singers and live performers. Spotify noted that India and the United States currently represent her largest streaming audiences on the platform.
Reflecting on what drives her artistry, Chauhan said the essence of every performance begins with the words of a song.
“Inspiration comes from lyrics, from the meaning of the song. I think everything that comes out, whether it’s an emotion or a feeling, is because of the lyrics combined with the tune,” she said.
Speaking about a defining milestone in her career, Chauhan recalled winning the Lata Mangeshkar Trophy on Meri Aawaz Suno, describing it as an unforgettable achievement.
“When I won the Lata Mangeshkar Trophy for Meri Aawaz Suno, it was an unbelievable moment for me,” she said.
The singer also opened up about a difficult experience from her teenage years that ultimately strengthened her resolve.
“As a teenager, it was humiliating to hear someone I looked up to say, ‘You are not good enough. If you keep singing like this, you’ll have to pack your bags and leave for your hometown.’ It was not said in a nice way and definitely didn’t sound like advice, but it did change something in me that day and today I feel grateful for it,” Chauhan shared.
Discussing the artists who have inspired her, Chauhan named Lata Mangeshkar, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Alisha Chinai and Alicia Keys among her biggest influences. She also revealed that Beyoncé’s Dangerously in Love remains her favourite album, while “Titliyan” from the Rocky Handsome soundtrack is one of the songs from her own repertoire that she holds closest.
Spotify said Chauhan’s selection as EQUAL Global Ambassador celebrates not only her extensive musical legacy but also her role in inspiring greater visibility for women artists. The platform added that her journey embodies the spirit of the EQUAL programme, which seeks to create more opportunities and representation for women in the global music industry.
