Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep sorrow over the demise of legendary tabla virtuoso Ustad Zakir Hussain, lauding him as a musical genius who transformed the realm of Indian classical music.
Hussain, aged 73, passed away in a San Francisco hospital due to complications from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, his family confirmed. He had been hospitalized for two weeks and was in intensive care before his condition worsened.
In his tribute, PM Modi highlighted Hussain's unparalleled contributions to music, stating, “Deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary tabla maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain Ji. He will be remembered as a true genius who revolutionized the world of Indian classical music. He brought the tabla to the global stage, captivating millions with his unmatched rhythm and artistry.”
The Prime Minister further praised Hussain’s ability to blend Indian classical traditions with global music, cementing his legacy as a symbol of cultural unity. “Through his seamless fusion of Indian and global sounds, he became an icon of cultural harmony. His iconic performances and soulful compositions will continue to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers,” he said. Modi also extended condolences to Hussain’s family, friends, and the global music fraternity.
Earlier this year, PM Modi had congratulated Zakir Hussain and his fellow members of the fusion band Shakti for their Grammy win in the Global Music Album category. Celebrating the achievement, Modi tweeted on February 5: “Congratulations to @ZakirHtabla, @Rakeshflute, @Shankar_Live, @kanjeeraselva, and @violinganesh on your phenomenal success at the #GRAMMYs! Your exceptional talent and dedication to music have won hearts worldwide. India is proud! These achievements inspire the next generation to dream big and excel in music.”
Hussain's illustrious career, marked by collaborations with global icons and pathbreaking performances, has left an indelible mark on the world of music. His passing is a profound loss for the cultural heritage of India and the world.
