Mangey Khan, the esteemed lead vocalist of the acclaimed Rajasthani folk band Barmer Boys, has passed away at the age of 49. Affectionately known as Manga, Khan was celebrated for his powerful voice and his immense contributions to Rajasthani folk music. He had recently undergone heart surgery and was recovering when he tragically passed.

Khan is survived by his wife and three children, leaving behind a legacy that deeply resonates with folk music enthusiasts across India. His passing marks a significant loss for the Indian folk music community. As the lead vocalist of the Barmer Boys, a renowned Manganiyar trio, Khan rose to fame following their unforgettable performance on Coke Studio India, Season 3.

In a heartfelt statement, Amarrass Records expressed deep sorrow over Khan’s passing: “With profound grief and an aching heart, we share the tragic news of the sudden demise of Manga (Mangey Khan), the lead vocalist and the voice of Amarrass Records’ band, Barmer Boys."

“Manga, as he was lovingly called, was one of the finest vocalists from the Manganiyar community. He was at the peak of his career, with decades of sold-out shows and applause ahead of him. His voice soared effortlessly through the high registers demanded by Manganiyar music, powerful yet sweet like birdsong. We will miss hearing it live, we will miss his smile, we will miss Manga, our dear friend.”

Over the course of his career, Khan performed over 200 concerts in 20 countries, gracing some of the world’s most prestigious festivals, including Roskilde (Denmark), Clockenflap (Hong Kong), Winnipeg Folk Festival (Canada), Music Meeting (Netherlands), OFFest (Macedonia), Respect Festival (Prague), FMM Sines (Portugal), Festival de la Citè (Switzerland), and Ziro Music Festival (India).

Amarrass Records’ tribute highlighted his immense influence on Rajasthani folk music and the global stage he helped elevate. The statement concluded, “He touched countless lives with his music, and his loss is an enormous blow to the world of folk music.”

Fans quickly took to social media to express their condolences, with one user writing, “Heartbreaking. Peace to the soul,” while another said, “A great loss for music lovers. RIP Manga.” One fan reminisced, “Awful news. I remember when they recorded at Katharas for BBC. Such a great crew… a huge loss.”

Mangey Khan, renowned for his distinctive voice, played a pivotal role in bringing Rajasthani folk music to the world. As a member of the Manganiyar community, his music uniquely blended Sufi, Rajasthani folk, and Hindustani classical influences, captivating audiences worldwide. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers alike.
