In this exclusive, Sahar Zaman talks about reimagining the legacy of Talat Mahmood, blending music, Kathak, and storytelling in “A Night of Two Legends,” and making nostalgia resonate with a new generation.

What inspired the concept behind “A Night of Two Legends,” and why revisit the legacy of Talat Mehmood in this format today?

The birth of this show lies in my book “Talat Mahmood The Definitive Biography”. It’s an adaptation into a Kathak dance recital witb my readings from the book. Our great danseuse, Kathak guru Shovana Narayan has made an exception to interpret his Ghazals and film songs through her Kathak. So it’s about one legend’s music and another legend’s dance coming together in this unique format. Interspersed between that are my stories. It’s like a tryptich.

How does Shovana Narayan’s Kathak interpretation add a new dimension to Talat Mehmood’s timeless music?

Her Kathak revisits his songs in fresh light. I am amazed to see different emotions expressed by her for ghazals and songs that are more than 60 years old. She brings out nuances of the Urdu poetry with the depth of her mudras. One must remember that the videos of his songs are very fondly remembered by people , with faces of actors like Dilip Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Dev Anand, etc. To break away from that strong memory and create a tot

In blending music, dance, and narration, how do you ensure the storytelling feels cohesive rather than fragmented?

For that you will need to watch the show. The music blends into the dance and then the dance flows into the narration. It’s a beautiful river

What role does Sahar Zaman’s narration play in making this experience more immersive for audiences?

My role is to evoke memory, nostalgia, wonder and fond remembrance by being the narrator of his life. Since I’ve researched and written his biography, I am well versed with most aspects of his life. The rest of the emotions come by being his family.

In an era of fast-paced entertainment, how do you make a nostalgia-led, legacy-driven showcase resonate with younger audiences?

Most young audience that come for my shows are either driven by curiosity or come along with their parents. But the way my design the shows is to ensure that the style is conversational and the language is GenZ ! Once they feel the magic of his voice, the rest is effortless. The rest is Talat Mahmood’s doing!
