The 21st edition of the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META), instituted by Mahindra Group and produced by Teamwork Arts, concluded with a grand awards night at Kamani Auditorium, wrapping up a week-long celebration of Indian theatre.
Held from March 19 to 25, META 2026 transformed Kamani Auditorium and the Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts into vibrant cultural hubs, showcasing 10 shortlisted productions selected from a record 422 entries across 20 states, 100+ cities, and 60 languages and dialects. The festival highlighted the diversity of contemporary Indian storytelling, spanning mythology, literature, politics, and social themes.
A key highlight of the evening was the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Amol Palekar, honouring his significant contribution to theatre and cinema, particularly in making the medium more intimate and accessible.
The awards night also featured a performance by T?L FRY, whose fusion of classical and contemporary rhythms added a dynamic energy to the ??????.
Among the top winners, Mithyasur bagged Best Production, while Saurav Palodhi won Best Director for Je Janlagulor Akash Chilo. Acting honours went to Turna Das, Dusha, and Mario Barzaghi in lead categories, alongside several awards across design, music, and choreography.
Speaking on the occasion, Jay Shah of Mahindra & Mahindra highlighted the festival’s role in showcasing diverse voices and fostering dialogue, while Sanjoy K. Roy of Teamwork Arts emphasised the resilience and creative depth of India’s theatre community.
With participation from both established and emerging artists, META 2026 reinforced its position as one of India’s most significant platforms for recognising excellence in theatre, celebrating the art form’s continued relevance and cultural impact.
