Honest Gear Talk : Audio Technica ATH-M50x Monitoring Headphones

Undoubtedly, These Should Be In Your Cart!

If you’re looking at the recording, mixing and mastering side of music, there’s always a list of gear that comes up again and again. Sometimes it’s a specific piece of gear that makes the world famous album what it is, and sometimes it’s gear that is common in the works of many renowned and legendary names in the music industry that makes it a go-to in any situation. Audio Technica as a company has been famously making such products that now have their own identity. Out of the many, with the surge of bedroom producers and musicians, the M50 headphones have become a staple in their own right. From upcoming electronic musicians taking over the industry by storm, to the likes of Alan Parsons, Snarky Puppy and Steven Wilson using them in their works in the studio, you will see them using these Audio Technica headphones. So let’s get honest, and see why these headphones have a special place in the audio engineering industry.

Main Features

One of the big reasons why the M50 range is highly popular is due to all that it provides at a lower range price of headphones. At Rs.9500, you’re getting a complete bang for your buck. It has a solid closed back casing with a 45mm driver diameter. It has an incredible frequency response ranging from 15hz to an incredible 28000hz. At an impedence of 38 ohms and input power climbing up to 1600 mW at 1khz, the headphones are more than powerful to drive themselves without any help of an external power source such as a headphone amplifier. Another big advantage to these headphones is that they are collapsible and can thus easily fit anywhere with your equipment.

‘No Quality Compromise’

The headphones at first are quite comfortable on the ears. The drivers are really good and when it comes to the selling point of the headphones being incredibly flat frequency wise, they certainly are. Except for the few small dips and bumps, they are pretty flat. While many headphones that are flat are usually dull sounding, these headphones sound very rich and full. The imaging of the stereo spectrum is very open and you can listen to a lot of things that might have not caught your attention on another set of headphones. Being closed back headphones; they are perfect for any recording and listening conditions. You can crank them up to 10 and still the resulting bleed from the headphones is minimal. Yes, your condenser microphone won’t even catch it. Thus, they are great not just for mixing situations, but also for tracking acoustic instruments, vocals and loud volume listening in public areas. You don’t need to be embarrassed for your musical choices in front of other people anymore.

The Audio Technica M-50x’s are a precedent in the music industry because of one thing and one thing only; you get exactly what you pay for. These headphones are not the best headphones in the world. At the same time, they aren’t some bass boost driven headphones with cheap components that are expensive just because of the brand they come from. It’s quality gear and it stays that way for a long period of time. Most of these headphones usually last people up to 7-8 years if kept properly. The only thing that is a downside is that the stock headphone covers tend to hurt the ears after long hours of listening. Whilst the drivers aren’t fatiguing to the ear, these covers force you to take them off and take a break for a while. That is easily solvable though, as there are many popular headphone covers that you can buy online and replace on your own.
