Sony Expands Iconic Walkman Brand With New Retro-Inspired Audio Gadgets

Sony is giving its iconic Walkman brand a fresh push with the launch of new premium digital audio players and hints of a retro-inspired headphone launch, tapping into renewed interest in classic audio devices.

The company recently announced two new high-end Walkman models, the NW-WM1AM3 and NW-WM1ZM3, aimed at audiophiles and music enthusiasts seeking high-resolution sound.

The NW-WM1AM3 is priced at $2,999 and is scheduled to go on sale on November 27, 2026, while the flagship NW-WM1ZM3 carries a price tag of $5,899 and has already sold out online.

Both models feature 5.5-inch displays, dual headphone jacks, expandable storage and up to 35 hours of music playback. The devices also incorporate Sony's DSD Remastering Engine, designed to enhance audio quality.

The flagship ZM3 model features premium components, including a gold-plated oxygen-free copper chassis, gold-plated screws and specialised wiring, positioning it as a high-end offering for serious music listeners.

Sony hints at a retro headphone comeback

Beyond its digital music players, Sony has sparked speculation about another addition to the Walkman family. The company has teased a new product through its social media channels, with an announcement scheduled for November 5, 2026.

The teaser has fuelled expectations of a new pair of Walkman-inspired on-ear headphones, potentially drawing design inspiration from the original MDR-3 headphones introduced alongside Sony's first Walkman in 1979.

While Sony has not confirmed the product or revealed its specifications, the announcement comes amid renewed interest in wired headphones and retro audio equipment.

Launched in 1979, the Walkman transformed portable music listening by allowing users to carry their music with them. More than four decades later, Sony continues to build on the brand's legacy through high-resolution digital players and products that draw on its heritage.

The upcoming announcement could mark another step in the company's effort to bring its iconic audio identity to a new generation of listeners.
