Kolkata Celebrates 250 Years Of US Independence With Music And Diplomacy

Kolkata marked the 250th anniversary of American independence with an event bringing together music, diplomacy and conversations around the growing India-US partnership.

Held at ITC Royal Bengal on October 12, the celebration brought together US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, West Bengal Finance Minister Dr Swapan Dasgupta, US Consul General in Kolkata Kathy Giles-Diaz, diplomats, business leaders and representatives from civil society. The occasion formed part of the US Mission to India’s Freedom 250 celebrations.

Music played a key role in the evening, underlining the role of cultural exchange in strengthening ties between the two countries. Performances by the US Navy Band Orient Express and aerial displays featured as part of the programme, while Musician 3rd Class Katie Grace Stephenson performed the national anthems of India and the United States.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Gor highlighted the opportunities emerging from bilateral cooperation across trade, technology and security. He described India and the US as trusted partners and pointed to their shared efforts towards building a more prosperous and secure future.

US Consul General Kathy Giles-Diaz said the anniversary was an opportunity to reaffirm shared values, including liberty, self-government and unity, while recognising the longstanding relationship between the two nations.

The event also reflected Kolkata’s historical links with the United States. The city’s connection with American diplomacy dates back to 1792, when George Washington appointed Benjamin Joy as the first American consul to Kolkata.

Beyond commemorating a milestone in American history, the gathering highlighted how music, culture and people-to-people engagement can complement diplomatic and economic ties. With India and the US continuing to explore cooperation across sectors, cultural platforms remain an important avenue for fostering mutual understanding and strengthening their relationship.
