Santoor legend Tarun Bhattacharya expressed deep sense of grief and loss at music director Bappi Lahiri’s death, he said, “Bappi Lahiri defined music as he was one of the most versatile music directors to have ever graced Indian film music industry. We have always known Bappi Lahiri as the Disco King but for me as a Classical musician some of his works some of his more serious, classical-based, romantic and folk compositions like Jaana kaha hai (rendered by him with Sulakshana Pandit, from Chalte Chalte or Yeh kis bandhan mein by Bhupinder from Doosri Dulhan, Maana ho tum by Yesudas, Kisi nazar ko tera intezaar by Bhupinder and Asha Bhosle, Aitbaar also some of his Bengali super hits remain popular to this day. Perhaps his early initiation and taalim (training) by his parents imbibed in him the musical genes.
A pointer to his everlasting appeal is the number of remixes from most of hits till date remains a major attraction for the young generation and remains contemporary.
Though one tends to overlook the many achievements of the composer Bappi Lahiri, overshadowed as they have been by his ‘Tathaiyya, tathaiyya’ brand of high decibel music he will remain immortal in the annals of Indian music industry.
